Why test and tag?

Testing and tagging safeguards and protects individuals in the workplace who use electrical appliances, tools and equipment, while also reducing the likelihood of electrical hazards. An employer can be held responsible if an accident occurs due to an appliance that was not tested and tagged.

To comply with SafeWork NSW,  testing and tagging of electrical equipment, including RCD’s (safety switch) must be undertaken by a competent person at least every 12 months.

  • Testing and tagging is the of process ensuring the safety of portable electrical appliances, such as tools and office equipment. Firstly, a visual examination checks for any signs of damage, followed by electrical testing utilising a Portable Appliance Tester (known as a PAT Tester).

Post-testing, an item receives a tag certifying its examination, displaying details including the tester's identity, test date and the next scheduled test date.

The core aim of testing and tagging is to safeguard workplace occupants from potential electrical hazards, thereby reducing risks. Failure to conduct prior testing and tagging may render the employer accountable in case of accidents.

The AS/NZS 3760:2022 Australian and New Zealand standards are the regulations and guidelines governing the test and tag industry in electrical appliance safety. This standard most recently updated in 2022 and referred to as AS/NZS 3760:2022, outlines parametres such as testing intervals, authorised personnel for testing and general guidelines.

  • Testing and tagging is essential for maintaining electrical safety in workplaces and other environments. It helps prevent accidents and minimises the risk of electrical hazards.

Regular testing and tagging contributes to accident prevention by addressing issues before they escalate into hazardous situations. Electrical faults such as frayed cords, damaged plugs or internal wiring issues may not be immediately apparent through visual inspection alone. However, electrical testing conducted during the process can uncover hidden faults that could pose serious risks if left unaddressed.

Furthermore, testing and tagging helps to mitigate the risk of electrical accidents such as electric shocks, fires or equipment malfunctions. By systematically assessing the safety of electrical appliances and ensuring they comply with established standards and regulations, organisations to create a safer environment for their employees, customers and the public.

Prioritising testing and tagging as part of routine maintenance and safety procedures, organisations demonstrate their commitment to safeguarding individuals and property from the potential dangers associated with electrical equipment. This proactive approach not only helps prevent accidents and injuries but also contributes to overall peace of mind and confidence in the safety of the environment.

  • In alignment with SafeWork NSW requirements:

'All testing and tagging of electrical equipment, including RCD's (safety switch) must be undertaken by a competent person at least every 12 months.’

You should also ensure that you request that you are provided with an electrical equipment register that details the results of the testing and tagging, faulty equipment and the date the next test and tag is required.

However, shorter intervals for testing and tagging are required for the following:

    • 3 months – building , construction and demolition industries – tools and equipment used in harsh environments are more likely to experience damage and wear which requires testing to be completed at more frequent intervals.

    • 6 months – factories, warehouse and production industries – in these environments equipment and tools are considered to be used constantly which again requires tools and equipment to be tested more frequently.

  • Testing and tagging procedures encompass two primary stages to ensure the safety and compliance of portable electrical appliances.

The process begins with a comprehensive visual inspection aimed at identifying any visible signs of damage, wear  or other issues that could compromise the appliance's safety. Our team carefully examines each appliance, paying close attention to components such as cords, plugs, sockets, switches and casings. Common visual indicators of damage include frayed or exposed wires, cracked casings, loose connections, and signs of overheating or burning.

Following the visual inspection, the electrical testing phase is conducted using specialised equipment, most commonly a Portable Appliance Tester (PAT). PATs are designed to assess various electrical parameters of appliances, including insulation resistance, earth continuity, polarity and leakage current. These tests are performed to evaluate the integrity of the appliance's electrical insulation, the effectiveness of its grounding and its compliance with safety standards and regulations.

Once the appliance has undergone both visual inspection and electrical testing, it receives a tag to indicate its safety status. These tags typically include essential information such as the date of testing, the identity of the tester or testing organization, and the next scheduled test date. Additionally, some tags may feature colour-coded indicators or other symbols to convey specific information about the appliance's testing history or classification.

Once testing and tagging has been completed, within 3 business days we will provide you with a comprehensive report of all items tested and tagged. Faulty items will also be reported on, but these will be brought to your attention at the time of testing and tagging to eliminate risk of use.

  • Testing and tagging must be conducted by qualified professionals to ensure compliance with safety standards and regulations.

  • Staying informed about relevant regulations and standards, hiring qualified personnel for testing and tagging, and maintaining detailed records of testing activities can help ensure compliance.
